The martial arts community has lost a great champion, a great
pioneer and a great individual. It is with sadness and sorrow that we report the
passing of 2003 Hall of Famer, Howard Jackson. Howard passed away on March 7,
2006 at the City of Hope hospital in Duarte, CA. Howard was a person who loved
life and was an inspiration to all who knew him. |

Howard Jackson was a point fighting champion, a full-contact champion and a
boxing champion. He was one of the few pioneers who was able to cross-over
in different arenas and be successful in all three of them. Though he will
be remembered by many as a champion, I will always remember him as my
friend. Howard was a man of integrity and honesty. He expressed his strong
support for the Museum because he felt it was the right thing to do. I will
be forever thankful to Howard for his kindness, his inspiration, his
committment and his wonderful attitude about life. The martial arts
community is what Howard loved and he will be missed by all. On behalf of
the Martial Arts History Museum, we send our prayers and condolences to his
loved ones. |

It is with great sadness that I express my sorrow and remorse for the loss of Howard Jackson. What a wonderful man, and what a great example he was to black belts around the world. I had the pleasure of sitting down and having dinner with him in Honolulu, Hawaii, and I cannot tell you a better man that would treat you with more respect and courtesy than Howard Jackson did. He actually sat down at the table with us after eating, and started singing for my wife and I. I have followed Howard Jackson"s career since the early 70s. And his epic battle with Benny the jet Urquidez. Aloha from Hawaii Howard, you will be missed. Master Bobby J Smith |

It is quite sad when a great person passes from us. I have know Master Howard Jackson since he became "Karate Player of the Year" back in the middle "70"s. His kindness and jokes always kept me laughing. Not only was he a great martial artist and competitor, Howard was one of the best men you could ever meet, let along call friend.
This world will surely miss his presence, but he will remain in our hearts and minds forever.... (smile) and knowing Master jackson, he is probable setting up kickboxing seminars with the Angels in Heaven... Sempre Fi! Grandmaster James McMurray |

I too met Howard in the mid 70"s and had the pleasure of seeing him again at the Master"s Martial Arts Hall of Fame in Newport Beach. Aside from being a great martial artist, Howard was a good man and anyone that knows him also loves him.
Howard, the fight is over and the party has begun... Enjoy your new existence. |

How unfourtunate to lose another legend. He truly was one of a kind. His Battle for the WKA Belt in Tokyo was won of the best sparring match that have have ever seen.

All of us who had the pleasure of knowing Howard Jackson were certainly privileged. He has always been a gentle-man. His indomitable spirit in the ring, his pure grace under pressure and his unselfish sharing endeared him to so many of us. His spirit will live on, at the Battle of Atlanta, in the PKA and in the hearts of everyone who knew him. |

Howard and I have been good friends for over 30 years. His dream was always for me to write a story about him with the title "Song of a Sometimes Singer". I loved the man like my little brother. Duane R. Ethington |

I met Mr Jackson while I was training at Mark Parra"s House of Champions in L.A. of the United States.
He presented himself as a very friendly and humble man, and it was a pleasure to have met him while I was there in Los Angeles.
The man had a wealth of knowledge and fight experience in the kickboxing ring.
May this real modern day warrior rest in peace!

Being from Detroit like Howard, as a kid I always looked up to him and followed his martial arts career eventhough I did not know him personally and he had relocated to California. Once I did become acquainted with him, I was always impressed with how humble he was in spite of his resume. For me he was a true role model. His infectious laugh and insightful comments will remain with me forever. Rest in peace my friend… Richard Plowden |

My heart goes out to the family and friends of such a great martial artist. I had the opportunity to know Howard as a friend. On New Years eve I called him and gave him my very best wishes. He was a class act and Heaven must have been in need of a strong angel. Until we meet again my friend. Ishmael Robles |

I shared a hotel room with Howard after a fight in Amsterdam. He was a great gentleman and a true example of a Martial Artist, he had the humility and class we all strive for. I am very saddened by the news of his passing. Edge Brown |

To a True Champion and Gentlemen. Howard Jackson was someone that we should all strive to emulate! May he rest in peace with our Good Lord Jesus.. Mr. Joseph Saladino |

I thougt Howard was fine man and the only martial artist to fight both sides out, both hands, and both feet equally. He was nice as he could be and very loyal to Chuck Norris.
He inspired Raymond McCallum and I to kickbox. Our late Instructor Demetrias Havanas now has and equal to spar in heaven. What a match that would be. Jeff Overturf |
|
It is sad to hear that such a great martial artist and person is not with us any more. As a kid I read about this martial arts legend in the martial arts magazines. I met Howard in a banquet in Clearwater for speakers at the NAPMA World Conference 5 years ago. When he sat at our table he introduced himself yet it did not dawn on me that he was Howard Jackson. He was the nicest and a humble person. We send time together throughout the rest of the week. I’ll never forget the stories he told me. Later I found out that he was ill. I e-mailed him and kept him in prayer. He was thankful and remembered me and my family. We’ll miss him but he is in a better place today with the Lord.

For the years that I knew him Howard Jackson was a great martial artist in every sense of the word. Not only was a champion in the ring he was also always willing to share with anyone the secrets of his martial arts success. He was always willing to help. He supported the Chuck Norris KDOOA Martial Arts Extravaganzas I was blessed to help with. Howard always asked after my family and remembered their names, dreams and their challenges with true concern. I think his greatest gift was leaving you with a smile and an increase sense of self-esteem. Howard Jackson will be greatly missed. |

You will be greatly missed! Howard Jackson was a truely great Martial Artist and a role model to all of us and I know he will be holding class in heaven. Rest in Peace. Sifu Mike Appleton Michael Appleton |

I remember all the small, $5.00 to fight tournaments in non-descript gymnasiums, in towns I can"t remember, and the less than average hotels from the early days. Mostly, I remember Howard, the Norris group, the camaraderie, friendship that lasts, and his engaging smile. Along with that, his fierceness as a competitor, brotherhood when he won and the utter enjoyment of watching such a life.
We really are all one..
Good journey, and peace to his loved ones. Steve LaBounty |

A beautiful soul, with a glorious heart. He had a fierce intensity wrapped up within a soft spoken, warm and caring spirit. One of the sweetest and most loyal of all here are the earth and well worthy to be with the angels he is now among. I was training for a fight, a rematch with Earnie Hart jr.,back in 1980. I flew out to L.A. to live and train with Howard. Earnie had beaten me the year before, took my title(P.K.A.Welter). Earnie was a very physical fighter,Howard got me ready. Spent a lot of time with me. I never thanked him. Thank you, Howard. You will be missed.

I first met Howard Jackson in 1972 when Jhoon Rhee invited Mr. Norris to bring a team to Washington, DC to fight a team from JRI. We were all so impressed that Howard (who gave up reach and size to all most everyone) was such a great competitor.
What we all came to learn in the years that followed was that Howard was a better person than he ever had been as a fighter.
My condolences to the Jackson family and to all his friends.
He was one of the good guys. |

What a terrible sad day. Gina Norris called me and told me we had lost Howard. It took the wind out of my sails.
I have known Howard for over 35 years. He was not only a Marine Corps Brother, but just a great close friend.
Moving here to work with Chuck was a great time for me. We talked every day and got together every chance we had. He was great fun to be around.

I had the Greatest honor of meeting Mr.Jackson when I was 10 years old. Being the oldest of three daughters our father being one of the great Martial Arts Pioneers Sam Price of the Midwest(hutchinson,ks). We traveled the country every weekend to any tournament that my father could find.We ended up in california. At this particular tournament is where I had the privilage of meeting Mr.Jackson, my father happenining to be competing the same time as my self could not coach me.Back in those days there were hardly any women in the Art, so I always competed in the boys divisions. The next thing I knew I took a reverse punch to the solorplex, While gasping for air Mr.Jackson, in the same division as my father ,but not in the ring yet, took the time to come over and coach me saying" that you must transform your mistakes into lessons for growth."get back in there and show me what you just learned" Now I am in my 40"s and still have not forgotten his words of wisdom and I share them everyday with my students."Gaurd me as the apple of the eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 17:8 We all will miss your words of strength and wisdom!!

My condolences to Sharon and the Jackson family. Howard was a great man, a great teacher and an amazing fighter. I had the privelage of training under Mr. Jackson for 7+ years and being friends for over 15 years. To say that he was "detail-oriented" would be an understatement! He ruled the mat with the authority of a DI and the experience of a champion and a master. He cared deeply about his students inside and outside of the dojo. I had the honor of being invited to the WCL event in Las Vegas recently. Mr Norris did a beautiful and fitting tribute to Mr. Jackson and Howard"s son Jeremy performed at halftime. I know that Howard was proud. Sharon, I do not know that well, but I do know that you have been an abslolute angel. We will miss him Chuck Reed |

| Notes on Mastery The question is simple... Who are you? What is your purpose?
1. Give up all your preconceived ideas, notions, belief system. Start from point Zero. 2. Mastery is not about how you feel. Feelings don't matter. There are enough courses and seminars out there to help you feel things, your past, or whatever. You cannot use feelings to measure your understanding of mastery. 3. Thus, journey has nothing to do with: your past, your issues, your belief system, your fear, or your guilt. Issues have nothing to do with mastery. You don't need repair or breakthroughs. 4. Mastery is not about solutions and fixes. It is not about solving things. It is not a place to get, it is not about getting someplace. It is the process of all times .
Discovery Mastery is exploration, unveiling, creating, and questions. Rigor is essential in mastery and is not to be taken casually. Be diligent, hungry and disciplined. If you are bored, you are being boring. Mastery is the ability of distinction. What we know comes from the eyes to our perception, then to our judgment and finally to our interpretation.
Mastery is like the first time; it is the first time all the time. What makes up our experiences? Physical sensation, Mental (how we think), Emotion (how we feel). The mind is a mechanism that is not designed to work right now. It is a thing that is designed by default to protect us from what might happen to us in the future based on what has happened to us in the past. Mastery is to love the plateau. The self is a separate identity apart from Mind, Emotions and Body. Mastery is not a solo journey. Steps to Mastery: 1. Experience your experience. Be present with what happens right now be aware of it, notice what occurs, show up in it, while it is now. 2. Communicate experiences to help others. The "I" is no longer confined to mind, feelings and body. What are you experiencing now? I am experiencing a sense of control, a feeling bigger than the "I" that I'm used to. I have a strong sensation in my body. I think I am having a hard time pulling out of my perceived "concepts" box. Oh God, I have a concept for everything. I am not my mind. I am not my body. I am not my feeling. Listening is simply hearing with attention. I must learn to listen with the self, not the mind or the body or the feelings. Everything happens in my language. The mind is everything Self is a place to notice from. Notice how you appear to others. Oh yeah and there is reality. Mind is the creator of the reality. When questions are asked, ask yourself: What is the purpose of the question, and who is asking it. Mastery is getting to where you are coming from.
Start with something simple. Try touching your forehead with your hand. Ah, thats easy, automatic. Nothing to it. But there was a time when you were as far removed from the mastery of that simple skill as a non-pianist is from playing a Beethoven sonata. First, you had to learn to control the movements of your hands (you were just a baby then) and somehow get them to move where you wanted them to. You had to develop some sort of kinesthetic "image" of your body so that you could know the relationship between your forehead and other parts of your body. You had to learn to match this image with the visual image of an adults body. You had to learn how to mimic your mothers actions. Momentous stuff, make no mistake about it. And we havent yet considered the matter of languagelearning to decode sounds shaped as words and to match them to our own actions.Only after all this could you play the learning game that parents everywhere play with their children: "Wheres your nose? Where are your ears? Wheres your forehead?" As with all significant learning, this learning was measured not in a straight line but in stages: brief spurts of progress separated by periods during which you seemed to be getting nowhere. Still, you learned an essential skill. Whats more important, you learned about learning. You started with something difficult and made it easy and pleasurable through instruction and practice. You took a masters journey. And if you could learn to touch your forehead, you can learn to play a Beethoven sonata or fly a jet plane, to be a better manager, do martial arts and get your Black Belt or improve your relationships. Our current society works in many ways to lead us astray, but the path of mastery is always there, waiting for us. By: George Leonard "Mastery"
