To the vast Gracie Family:
My deepest condolences to all of you. Many years ago, as a young black
belt and martial arts journalist, I remember how little thought and print
in the United States was ever given to the art of jujutsu, Japanese or
otherwise. Starting in the late 1980s, as the famed Gracie clan started
moving to the U.S. and defeating all comers, I saw the massive transition
from virtual anonymity to worldwide respect that the Gracie family brought
to Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
I see your patriarch as the man most responsible for this worldwide shift
in martial arts respect. He thus joins other rare grandmasters like Gichin
Funakoshi and Bruce Lee as one of the most prominent and influential
martial artists of the entire 20th century.
And I wholeheartedly echo Master Tom Callos" memorable words that "his
health, his spirit, his family, his diet, his dedication, and his
legacyall of it serves as a guidebook for other teachers to use as an
example of a life lived fully, vigorously, and with a rare kind of passion
and focus."

The influence Grand Master Gracie had on the world of martial
arts cannot be exaggerated and I am saddened to hear of his passing.
If you have ever watched an MMA fight (UFC or others), if you have ever
had a class in BJJ, and indeed if you train at any martial arts school
that advertises "grappling" as part of it"s style, then you were directly
influenced by Helio Gracie and his amazing family.

Grandmaster Helio Gracie was, without a doubt, the most important martial arts figure
of our time. His health, his spirit, his family, his diet, his dedication, and his legacy --all of it

After the passing of my father --a decade ago --I discovered that they don"t go away when they
die. Your father stays with you, closer than before, and available whenever you need him. It is

He was your father, for sure --but in many ways, I feel, he was a father to a lot of us. We looked
to him for lessons about how to be a Master in today"s world. He seemed to carry himself with

I had pleasure to train with the Gracie Family back in 80s and
had the wonderful experience while on a visit tothe Torrance academy in
the 90s to actually go on the mat wity GrandMaster Helio, it was a
landmark moment that I will never forget. after 39 years of training in
the arts I still have to say that 45 minutes with Grand Master Helio
Gracie was a definite crowning achievement. It with great Sadness and Deep
respect to all members of the gracie Family especially to my personal

It is a sad day for the Martial Arts world. A True GrandMaster
has passed. This gentleman made the biggest impact on modern martial
arts.
I like many others did not beleive that I would ever have to fight on the
ground. That changed back in the mid 90s after my first exposer to
Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Here it is now 2009 and the only thing I really want to
do is train is Jiu-Jitsu. I was lucky enough to train with Grandmaster
Helio a few years ago. This is something that I will always remember.

I did not have the honor of ever meeting Grandmaster Helio
Gracie, however, his impact on myself and the martial arts community has
been priceless. We have all been blessed to have such an influential
martial artist touch our lives for so long. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is a staple
in the martial arts. Without his tenacity, open-mindedness and superb
teaching methodology grappling and ground defense would be a lost art and
the UFC would have never been.
Though we have lost a great pioneer of the martial arts he has left a

only be in martial arts a very short time, I have been told of the
importance of Grandmaster Gracie, and the Gracie family, has had on
Jiu-Jitsu. It truly takes a special person to dedicate their life to an
art, then pass it on to others to learn. For all his students and for all
of us that continue to learn it is a blessing & honor for us that
Grandmaster Gracie expressed his kindness and dedication to teach others.
He will be missed but he will never be forgotten as his trade and art will
live forever. Thank you Grandmaster Gracie and the Gracie family. God
