Ji Han Jae

Ji Han Jae
When the Korean war ended in 1953, Choi opened a school in his home and began teaching other students. One of these students was Ji Han-Jae. Ji studied under Choi until 1956 and then moved to his home city in An Dong where he opened his first school called An Moo Kwan. There he taught "Hapki Yu Kwon Sool" where Ji practiced kicking techniques intensely. He would put soy beans in a sock and hang it from the ceiling. He would then practice flying back spinning kicks over and over. Ji decided to relocate his school in Seoul in 1957. He was lucky enough to open a school at a neck tie factory but only had a few students. One day an unknown came to Ji's school to challenge him. He grabbed Ji's black belt and pulled him and Ji executed an elbow lock until the gangster said nothing but just passed out. After this incident, the gangster sent some 30 students to train with Ji Han-Jae. By 1962, Ji's Sung Moo Kwan school was well know and doing well financially. Ji then had the opportunity to teach at the Military Academy and to instruct the Military Supreme Council. While Ji was teaching the President's security guard, his school moved to the West Gate Section. By this time, Hapkido was no longer confined to Seoul and had become a nationally recognized Korean martial art. When Ji had gone to Seoul in 1957 he was appointed as the head of Hapki Yu Kwon Sool In the Seoul district. Ji felt that this was too long a name and decided to use the "do" ending because "do" means "way of life" and "Sool" means techniques. Thus, the name "Hapkido" originated.
